Our History

The business originated from a wholesale company S.Newman & Son (see photo, right) based in Covent Garden Market. Melvyn is the third generation of his family to have traded in the market.  With good volumes of Kentish fruit being purchased for the wholesale trade, in 1973 S. Newman & Son decided to take control of supplies and grow their own.  As a young man Melvyn jumped on the opportunity of changing the working lifestyle of those early mornings in the market to focus on running the farming business and has never looked back.

From those early beginnings based on a 20 acre farm in Paddock Wood the business quickly grew to 250 acres before relocating to its current premises near Canterbury in 1989.  The business has always  had  service provision at the heart of the packing and storage operation to ensure 12 month utilisation of the site; so in 2000 the business was split to ensure better focus.  Newmafruit Farms Ltd is the fruit production operation and Newmafruit Ltd manages packing and Research & Development.

Now one of the largest fruit growers in the UK our reputation has been built through our continued commitment to delivering quality produce with excellent service; achieved by an on-going reinvestment plan developing our staff, our facilities, and expanding and renewing our crops.
